The Role of the BMI Formula in Slimming Treatments
How does the BMI formula interfere in weight loss success stories?
You have probably heard the words “BMI Formula” or plainly “BMI” being thrown here and there. You may be hearing how it is used to determine the current state of your body or how it’s able to tell if you aree obese. And while there is some truth in this, there are still issues regarding the BMI Formula that needs some shedding of light. In this article, I will be talking about the basics of the BMI formula, and what you need to know about it.
BMI is short for Body Mass Index. It is the measurement of relative size based on a person’s weight and height. It is known as one of the most reliable body fat calculator to date . A little known fact about the BMI is that it has been around since the 1830s although at that time, it was known as the Quetelet Index—named after Adolphe Quetelet who formulated the said index’s equation. Your BMI can be calculated by dividing his/her weight (kilograms) by the square of your height (metres). Shown below is the formula
Once you’ve determined your BMI. The next step is to determine the classification of your BMI. Refer to the table below.
The table above shows you the different classifications attributed to the BMI. It is rather straight forward but, you will see that there are two different cut-off points—the principal and the additional. The column for principal cut-off points is the most common basis for classifications while the column for the additional cut-off points is formulated quite recently. The later column is intended for specific populations that have a differing degree of fatness than the majority .
Not only is the BMI a body fat calculator, it is also an accurate indicator of health risks that are attributed to being overweight or obese. For instance, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease are the health risks associated to being overweight. Calculating for your BMI will give you an approximate percentage of how likely you can get diagnosed with these health risks. This concern can be sensitive, and should be discussed with a health professional as cases may vary.
